Audiofrog, the car audio startup founded by installation guru and Harman exec Andy Wehmeyer, will launch its first product in multiple countries this October.

It plans to be a global premium car audio brand, and because of a world presence, Audiofrog doesn’t need to sell to “800 car audio dealers” in the US to be profitable, so it will target a select group of US stores that it believes to be the best in installation and service.

“Our initial target is about fifty specialist accounts who are the premium retailers in their markets and who specialize in custom installation, stellar audio performance and friendly customer service,” said Wehmeyer. “We don’t have a target for the number of retailers we need for the long term because we’re focused solely on doing business with the right retailers.”

The initial line of speakers will be sold a la carte, so tweeters, mids and woofers are separate, as are crossovers.

What makes the speakers unique are first, what they are not—they are not reworked home audio speakers or reworked off-the-shelf factory speakers, said Wehmeyer.

All use a copper pole piece cap that is rare for car audio. It reduces coil inductance for a better, flat frequency response and “dramatically reduced” distortion, he said.

The grilles are uniquely designed and double as installation kits. The grilles can be dismantled and customized, covered in leather or vinyl or painted.  They can also be used as the foundation for a custom fabrication panel.  The grille mesh is a proprietary punched design.   The speakers also come with dry transfer logo badges.

There are no plastic parts on the speakers, said Audiofrog. The brackets for the tweeter are cast zinc instead of cast aluminum and the housing for the crossover is cast aluminum.  The crossover gives you accurate adjustments in 1/4dB increments, a first for car audio, said Wehmeyer.

Prices range from $399 for a pair of tweeters to $949 for 6.5 inch mid bass drivers.  The line includes 10- and 12-inch woofers at $649 to $699.  A lower end line will be shown around CES.

Audiofrog says one of its key selling points is installation help and service to retailers.

The brand will make its formal debut at the KnowledgeFest trade show August 16-19 in Dallas, where it will begin signing up retailers.

The first countries to receive products include the U.S., Canada and Indonesia.
