If there was any doubt whether consumers want a 4G LTE connection in their car, General Motors just found out the answer is almost 100 percent yes.
In the four weeks that GM has been delivering cars with 4G capability, 98 percent of its customers have opted for the free trail, Mary Chan, President of GM’s Global Connected Consumer Business told CNET.
She called it a “scary high acceptance rate for the trials,” which last for 3 months or 3 GB of data, depending on which comes first.
Users can light up their tablets, laptops and other devices in the car via a WiFi connection using the service. Off trial, the fee is $10 for 200MB of data and up to $50 for 5GB of data.
In the broadest roll out of 4G by a car maker, GM is including 4G LTE with a WiFi hot spot in even its low budget cars, such as the $17,000 Chevy Spark. Already, 4G and WiFi is available in the new Malibu and Impala and it should be 30 car models by the end of the year.
The new 4G connection also gives you a more powerful connection to OnStar and remote-start-from-a-phone.
Although consumers almost unanimously want 4G in the car, it still remains to be seen if they are willing to pay for it with ongoing service fees.
