Finally, the Dept. of Transportation has issued a plan recommending 20 percent deployment of Vehicle-to-Everything, known as V2X, (cars talking to each other and to infrastructure such as traffic lights) by 2028.
The technology to enable V2X might include aftermarket devices that could be sold through car audio specialists, according to industry members’ statements in the past.
With V2X, cars can share information about their location in fog or other hazardous road situations. They can send signals about road hazards or work zones.
Originally, V2X messages were to transmit over a dedicated WiFi system. Then the FCC switched to a plan for cellular V2X communication late in 2019. The system allows vehicles to continuously exchange messages on “relative speed, position, and other relevant data. This form of communications ensures 360-degree awareness, even in situations with poor or obstructed visibility, such as around corners or in dense fog,” wrote the DOT.
The DOT plan, announced last week “is a vital first step towards realizing the full lifesaving potential of this technology — technology that could prevent up to 615,000 crashes,” National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said.
The DOT’s plan also calls for 25 percent of intersections with traffic lights to be V2X-ready by 2028, and that V2X should be fully deployed by 2036.
V2X technology has been in the works since 1995, said Engadget. There were efforts to deploy it under the Obama Administration, which were stalled under the Trump Administration.
The DOT plan marks a renewed effort to bring the technology, embraced by many car makers, to US roads.
The Federal Highway Administration has announced almost $60 million in grants related to V2X, which could help fund the deployment.

Enough is Enough! We sit in California with “crappy disintegrating roadways” and $5 a gallon gas prices, while looking at pieces of an abandoned overhead high speed train track to nowhere! Which has gobbled Billions of taxpayer dollars and has nothing to show for it! Our Government needs to stand back and let the Private Industries we have Develop Technology and not Force us into their molds. The push to “Go Green” has stagnated our Economy and is a Very expensive pathway towards bankrupting our Nation. Total Control is exactly what Big Government wants, at the expense of your Freedom and livelihood.
I’m concerned too, that you’ve been wearing the foilhat too long. As a native Californian and lifelong resident here your comment is not only misleading but also comes off as very poorly thought out both for us locally as well as for our industry.
Anybody worried about “Gubmint Spyin on Meh!” better be using burner phones and computers they only take out of a lead-lined safe when they are in use, otherwise you’re *almost 30 years* past the “issue” you claim becoming *normal*.
Government also, btw, doesn’t set gas prices. Your local station owner does. And oil is cheap right now, thanks to domestic production hikes and releasing of barrels from the SPR (thanks Joe!) So if you take issue with gas prices, idk maybe go green and buy an electric? Add to the *expansion* of your (our) industry’s potential a little bit? Maybe?

The factory can pull them up to look at and use it to deny new car warranty coverage. Yes a brick in the road can cancel your 5year 100k mile warranty.
And its been done to people with new cars at 15k miles on them.
Kinda cool stuff this V2X… The problem is that X includes government taxing authorities who will use technology to tax you by mile for driving. The technology brings lots of good things but may cost you a little privacy…
