Sound Off Audio is a small manufacturer of car audio speaker boxes that is preparing to go national, making an official debut at KnowledgeFest this August.
Matt Layfield, owner of Sound Off Audio, near Altha, FL. has operated a car audio shop since the mid-90’s and specialized in custom speaker boxes. As the recession hit, his retail business trailed off, but his speaker box business grew.
He presently supplies made-to-order, custom fit enclosures to about 40 to 50 retailers and he has about 200 designs to fit different car makes and models.
Layfield says he has an advantage over larger suppliers in that he can react quickly to new car model introductions.
“When a new truck comes out or a new body style in a vehicle that demands a brand new speaker box, we’re there before anyone else. Most other manufacturers take 2 to 3 years,” said Layfield. Also, he claims, “Because it’s a small operation, we pay a lot of attention to detail.”
The speaker boxes are produced out of a shop at Layfield’s home.
The most popular model is the Chevy crew cab from 2007 to 2012. Layfield builds an amp rack into the box that sells for about $180 (without speakers or amps).
