The 2010 Lexus was the last car to roll off the assembly line with an in-dash cassette deck, and apparently there are no mainstream car makes offering the device this year, says The Detroit News.

But for the aftermarket, 22,000 units are expected to ship to retailers this year, says the Consumer Electronics Assoc.

last of the cassette decks in new carsOf course, that’s down 25 percent from 2010. By 2014, we should see shipments of 14,000 units to retailers.

We see that Crutchfield has a few decks listed from about $49. The Pioneer KEH-P4020 shown here is listed at $129.99.

We can’t help but wonder when the last time was anyone came into your store asking for a car cassette deck.

  1. In the past few weeks I have had to tell two peolpe that is was “time to let go of the cassette”. Both actually wanted a cd/cassette combo. Its the same with the cd changer, I get asked just a few times a year and only from the “older” folks.

  2. We still sell 1 or 2 per year.. special order only. The CD/cassette combo usually. I just don’t know what I’m going to do with the 200 cassettes I can’t play anymore!
