Pioneer revealed new details on the launch of the SPHERA radio, the first aftermarket radio to offer Dolby Atmos immersive sound.
The model DMH-WT8000NEX will ship in the second quarter in the US and third quarter for Canada at a new suggested retail price of $1,600 USD.
SPHERA is based on the current Pioneer DMH-WT6000NEX, but it it adds the ability to produce Dolby Atmos immersive audio through CarPlay, working with one’s existing factory four speaker locations, making it suitable for most cars.
Dolby Atmos is referred to as 3D audio. Unlike traditional surround sound that works on a horizontal plane (like 5.1 or 7.1 systems), Atmos adds a height dimension to create a more realistic soundscape.
Pioneer makes Dolby Atmos work in millions of cars by using its former Auto-EQ/Auto-Time alignment technology, which has evolved to what it calls Pure Auto-Tuning. When the SPHERA radio boots up, it takes you through a step-by-step guide, calibrating your vehicle’s audio system. The Auto-Tuning looks at how different sounds and frequencies bounce off or are absorbed in the cabin of the car. It acoustically analyzes how the trims, shapes, and textures of the different materials of the car interact with each single audio source point. The SPHERA will then save this and apply it in real-time to adjust the Atmos/Spatial audio content to work with as few as four speakers.
SPHERA has a 10.1-inch HD touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity. It has an LED light bar and a strobing effect that beats to the music. Also included is turn by turn navigation.
SPHERA, by the way, means “atmosphere” from Latin/Greek roots.
More on Dolby Atmos
Dolby Atmos is a form of spatial audio that uses up to 128 audio objects. An object can be the singer, and another the bass guitar or drums. Each is recorded as their own separate audio track that is assigned to 3D positioning based on the playback time. Using the Auto-Tuning results, the Pioneer SPHERA will move, in real-time and independently, the audio objects and apply the audio corrections required. All this is based on Pioneer’s acoustic mapping of the vehicle.
Outside the traditional 12-volt media channels, the Pioneer’s SPHERA has amassed over 470 million impressions on various social media platforms and YouTube. Spatial Audio music is being adopted into mainstream streaming services. The Bad Bunny Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show in 2026 featured immersive spatial audio, allowing viewers to experience the performance with enhanced depth and clarity. The show was available in spatial audio on Apple Music, designed to make the sound fill the space for home viewers.
