Award winning salesman and former sales manager for leading shop Titan Motoring, Dan Bowman launched a sales training company aimed at 12 volt retailers, distributors, and manufacturers
Bowman’s consulting service (see TheRealDanBowman.com) aims to help retailers upsell customers at a time when fewer shoppers are entering stores and every sale counts more than ever.
His training program, called The Adding Machine, is designed to teach salespeople how to upsell and add attachments to the sale and to make sure that a would-be $15,000 customer is not sent on his way with a $1,500 sale.
“When someone comes in and asks for one thing, it doesn’t mean they just want that one thing. It’s just what they know to ask for. So you show them..ask questions…find out the ‘why’ not just ‘what’…Your client is not the expert on what’s available to them,” said Bowman. He shows salespeople how to capitalize on different product categories. And he teaches the progression from entry-level to premium.”
Bowman has conducted over 45 presentations during his career at shows including KnowledgeFest, MasterTech Expo, various distributor shows, and as a trainer for Morel and Crutchfield.
Bowman’s training offers three packages (with more on the way).
Package 1–“The Invoice” is a deep dive over four weeks. A retailer will send Bowman all its invoices over a week’s period. “We’ll go through the invoices, and talk about missed opportunities in categories.” He teaches how to better present an invoice so it makes sense to the customer and so it isn’t easily undercut if the customer presents it to a competing store.
Package 2—Includes three weeks of reviewing invoices plus three days on the showroom floor and three weeks of follow up.
Package 3—A social media audit to look at the shop’s digital footprint and how it can be tweaked. “With Titan, we took a dormant TikTok account from 500 followers to over 40,000, and when the numbers went up, the phone started to ring,” said Bowman. “Most retailers are posting stuff with no purpose. Where sales and marketing meet is where this audit comes in.”
Bowman entered the industry in the late 90s as an installer and was called to fill in temporarily on the sales floor. He was so successful that his boss switched him to sales. He eventually co-owned Sound Auto, NJ, then went to Hot Rides, PA. Most recently, he was Sales Manager at Titan Motoring, TN, which won a MEA Retailer Of The Year in 2022 (while Bowman was a sales consultant). Bowman won Sales Pro of the Year in 2023.
