US Amps, the legacy maker of amplifiers that was purchased by a group of competitors and enthusiasts last fall, will soon ship what it calls the most powerful Class AB amp ever produced, according to CEO Michael James.
The new USA-500HC amplifier is the third iteration of the model and is expected to ship in about 45 days offering 5,500 watts output at about .004 or .006 percent THD. Users can request custom versions of the amplifier including different colors.
Additionally, the company announced that US Amps’ original designer and part owner Dirk Ecker, is now US Amp’s Lead Engineer.
Also new, US Amps is now offering speakers and subwoofers. Some of the subs are hand-built in the US.
Custom amplifiers are still built in the US. Others are assembled overseas based on a US Amps-built prototype, using the company’s proprietary parts such as potentiometers, wiring, etc.. “The only thing we are using that others make are capacitors and transistors. But if there’s something you don’t like, I have other parts and I’ll use them. If you don’t like the colors, if you want to match the color of your car, give me the color code and it will match,” said James.
The amplifiers focus on sound quality with low THD and high slew rates. James claims if the amp is rated at 2,000 watts then it produces a full 2,000 watts until it is turned off. All amplifiers are burned in at 4 ohm and 2 ohm mono for 30 minutes each, James said.
The company is also now offering speakers and subwoofers. Among the speakers are the Timbre 6 series 3-way component system ($899) with bi-amp capable passive crossover. It has a 6.5- inch woofer, 3-inch midbass and a tweeter. Power handling is 150 watts at 4 ohms. It is joined by the Timber 8 with 8-inch woofer, 4-inch mid and tweeter an crossover ($1099). They use neodymium magnets and carbon fiber cones.
The company said its products will be used by a number of sound off competitors this season. “You, know, we kind of took over a company that had a huge following. Until everybody starts to realize what we’ve done and especially now that we have Dirk on board full time, they are kind of tentative I’m sure. We are going to get our name out there. We know we have big shoes to fill,” said James.
