2022 Car Audio Aftermarket Facts

First, some data from the holidays we pointed to earlier: sales in consumer electronics overall fell 5.3 percent over the same period a year ago November 1- December 24, according to Mastercard.

This was the second steepest decline in consumer spending categories, with sales of jewelry declining the most at 5.4 percent.

For the year, aftermarket car audio is forecast to rise by about 5 percent in shipments to dealers to $2 billion, compared to $1.9 billion in 2021 and $1.7 billion in 2020, according to the Consumer Technology Association (CTA).

This includes the categories of head units, amplifiers, speakers, subwoofers, DSP, mobile video, advanced driver safety products, remote start/security, dash cameras and rear cameras.

Drilling down to results for car audio aftermarket specialists, sales to consumers are expected to drop about 16 percent this year over last, according to the Mobile Electronics Association (MEA).  But sales are still above pre-pandemic levels, said MEA.

By the end of 2021, the size of wholesale aftermarket motorcycle, powersports and marine audio markets combined was an estimated $225 -$235 million, according to several industry members.

The break down in wholesale sales were

Motorcycle Audio                        $25 -$35 million

ATV/Powersports Audio           $75 million

Marine  Audio                              $125 million

The Mobile Electronics Specialists of America (MESA) buying/marketing group announced in March 2022 that its annual sales hit $400 million.

Other facts:

98 percent of new cars in the US come with CarPlay, and 79 percent of buyers “only consider CarPlay-capable vehicles” when shopping for new cars.

As of May, 2022 150 million cars ‘were supported by’ Android Auto said Google.

OEM automotive shipments are expect to hit $17.6 billion in 2022, up about 4 percent from $16.9 billion in 2021 and   $15.1 billion in 2020, said the CTA.

The number of cars on the road as of Q2 2022 was 284.4 million, according to Statista

The average age of cars on the road is 12.2 years, according to Kelley Blue Book.  The average sedan or coupe is 13.1 years old and the average truck or SUV is 11.6 years old.

    Can you cite this source directly. Because I don’t believe it’s anywhere near that.
