CORRECTED: Metra Electronics will ship this week a “before-the-amplifier” DSP that works in almost any car except those with MOST-based radio systems.

The new AX-DSP allows users to keep their factory radio but add aftermarket components in a cost effective solution. It takes the factory signal directly from the CAN bus and adds time delay compensation and crossover.

The AX-DSP effectively replaces the factory amplifier.  “In a digitally amplified system from the factory, the radio outputs a fixed level audio output; it’s an audio signal on which you can’t control the volume.  On another pair of wires, the radio sends out CAN bus info to the factory amplifier telling it to increase or decrease volume.  Our DSP is designed to replace the factory amplifier and make it think it’s connected to the factory amplifier,” said Jason Anderson, Metra VP Research and Development.

Alternatively, the AX-DSP could be used just as a stand alone interface to feed signal to a DSP that cannot work with a digitally amplified system. “This solution is a great fix for customers or installers desiring a specific type of DSP that would otherwise require a timely installation process using summing devices.”

The AX-DSP is offered with either a general harness or vehicle specific harnesses to work with select car models. Ten harnesses are offered initially including harnesses for Ford, GM, and Chrysler.

It has “chime cooling.” So rather than amplifying the chime in the factory radio (when an aftermarket amp is added) it automatically keeps the chime to its factory volume.
The DSP also provides clipping detection and limiting circuits. So it can detect clipping and turn down the audio by 20dB for analog systems only. The installer can adjust the limiting sensitivity or defeat the feature.
The Axxess DSP has 6 inputs, 6 outputs, 5V RMS. It also has a 31 band graphic EQ. The Front, Rear, and Sub outputs can be delayed independently for up to 10ms to optimize sound for the listening position. The AX-DSP also retains Sync and OnStar, and can read, write and store your information for future recall.

It will work with an app over a Bluetooth connection to a smartphone so installers may adjust settings. It works with an Android or iOS device.

    1. Yea, they get out great product “IDEA’S”, but having more than one on hand is a must during an install.
