Several retailers across the country are cashing in on a FedEx deal with Mobileye, VOXX and other driver safety brands.
FedEx Ground Linehaul (tractor trailer) trucks must add Mobileye, VOXX or other early crash warning/lane departure products to their trucks in order to renew their contracts with FedEx starting September 1, said Steve Witt of American Road Products, who has helped some retailers get involved in the program.
If the FedEx Ground truckers installed the equipment by March 31 they received a $1,200-$1,700 stipend from FedEx. If they install the equipment by May 31, they get 50 percent of the stipend.
The truckers must also install DVR products connected to the cloud from an approved list of products.
Retailers 919 Motoring, NC, Sound FX, DE and others have taken advantage of the program, which applies only to FedEx Ground and not to other FedEx divisions.
919 Motoring worked on 75 trucks in multiple states in a $50,000 gross deal according to Owner Shaun Reilly. Marty Dean of Soundz Plus, IL flew down to Georgia to help Reilly perform some of the installs.
Reilly said calls from truck owners were still coming in ten days ago at a frantic pace at to meet the March 31 deadline.
He believes other fleet deals will follow as the word gets out about the shop’s involvement with FedEx.
SoundFX worked on 13 trucks installing Mobileye and a Smart Witness connected DVR by American Road. It also was responsible for sales of the Mobileye and Smart Witness products as part of the deal. VP Brian Layton said installation and calibration took about one day per truck. He said the deal was very profitable and he charged about $2,500 per truck.
Witt believes there’s plenty more opportunities for installers under the FedEx program before the new May 31 deadline. “This is a tangible example of how the independent specialist can expand their business by pursuing local fleet business.” He knows of 5 dealers who participated in the program through American Road’s aid. Witt helps 12 volt retailers create Powerpoint presentations to bring to the FedEx operators.
“This program is just the start of large scale North American corporate vehicle safety initiatives that Authorized Dealers could take advantage of. Only a few installing dealers that meet the customer’s tough certification and insurance requirements will be eligible to be part of this rapidly growing business. I will be delivering information at KnowledgeFest Spring Training about some of corporate safety opportunities that are about to be launched in North America,” Witt said.
