The first place winner for the Connect Car award at the recent CTIA Show (the “CES” of the wireless industry) was a startup called splitsecnd that makes a device by the same name.
Splitsecnd is reportedly the only device that plugs into a cigarette lighter to provide car tracking, detect a crash and automatically call emergency services within 7 seconds, (other devices plug into an OBD2 port instead). An early beta version of the device has been on the market for 2 years but a new 1.5 device launches in November and may be available in brick and mortar stores as well as online. The new version has a built-in 3G cellular modem so you don’t need your phone for an emergency service connection. However, under the car tracking feature, you may track a car on your phone. The price is $149 with a monthly fee of $15.95.
Taking second place in the CTIA Super Mobility 2015 awards for the Connected Car was the Cobra Dash Cam and in third place, was the Viper SmartStart 4.0,
The Cobra CDR 855 BT Drive HD Dash Cam claims to be the first of its type to connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth. This allows red light camera and speed camera alerts as well as warnings of local police speed traps from other drivers. The Dash Cam includes a 2-inch LCD screen, ultra-wide 160° lens and embedded G-Sensor to automatically save and protect clips if an impact has been detected. It also records in full 1080P Full HD video. For more information, click here.
The Viper SmartStart 4.0 by Directed allows remote start from an Apple Watch or Android smartphone. It was first shown at CES last year and is expected to be released in the near future. The new app allows you to remote start your car from your watch from anywhere in the world with cellphone service.
