Amazon officially launched Monday a car audio installation program where consumers can find a local installer for items such as car radios, backup cameras, speakers, subwoofers and more.

The car audio installation program is part of a new “Amazon Home Services” shop that also includes installation and service for home improvement, computers and electronics, lawn & garden, and “lessons” as well as “automotive.”

Specific car audio installation services are listed as Car Coaxial Speaker Installation , Backup System Installation, Car Stereo Installation, as well as services for car component speaker installation, car alarm, installation, vehicle backup system installation, car subwoofer installation, car remote door lock installation, powered subwoofer installation, car DVD player installation and more.

However, services are not yet offered in all markets and only the services listed in your zip code will appear unless you enter a new zip code. In my particular zip code in Connecticut no automotive services were available. In the zip code “90201” all of the above services were listed.

Services appear to be available in Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Southern Florida, Texas and some other areas along the East Coast and in the Midwest according to an Amazon map.

One of the installers on the east coast is Auto Sound & Security in Brooklyn, NY. The store manager said he’s received four customers so far and many are upgrading to other products, which makes the program profitable. “Someone came in with equipment he purchased for installation and upgraded to a subwoofer. Another came in with a radio to install and added four speakers,” he said.

Another store, Sound America in West Palm Beach, FL also said Amazon customers are upgrading and he is able to sell accessories such as kits, harnesses and interfaces for radios. However, the manager  noted that he already received a complaint from a customer that never actually used his shop for any service and who then complained to Amazon. Now he’s trying to resolve the issue.

In Amazon’s announcement today, it said that in less than 60 seconds, customers can browse, purchase and schedule services. The participating installers are “handpicked pros,” it said.

As we reported in December, industry veteran Ray Windsor helped to sign up installers to the Amazon program, acting as a broker between Amazon and the retailers. At the time he said he was working with dealers in more than 30 markets.

More details on the program may be found here.
