Here Comes the Polar Vortex, Again

Attention remote start dealers.  In a semi-repeat of last year, the polar vortex, which sent temperatures plummeting last winter, is due to blast cold air into the Northeast, predicts AccuWeather.

“After record-shattering temperatures and high snow totals last winter in the Northeast, a similar theme will continue into the 2014-2015 season,” said AccuWeather.

It added, “Cold air will surge into the Northeast in late November, but the brunt of the season will hold off until January and February. The polar vortex, the culprit responsible for several days of below-zero temperatures last year, will slip down into the region from time to time, delivering blasts of arctic air.”

But this year the sub-freezing temperatures may come in shorter spurts, without the persistent 15 to 20 below readings seen last year.

AccuWeather also predicts more than average snowfall in parts of the Northeast (west of the I-95 corridor, so Harrisburg PA down to Hagerstown).

Like sales of air conditioners, sales of remote start vary with the weather so a colder winter usually means higher sales.

Directed’s Jim Jardin said, “As many retailers know, the weather conditions to help drive remote start sales need to be ‘just right.’  Last season was the first in many years that these conditions lined up to make a great remote start season.”  He added, “Call it a repeat, but the ‘just right’ conditions….. are back. We started to see a spike in consumer interest in early September, and our retailers are already off to a great start.”

Mike Thompson of Omega Research said, “We’re prepared.  We’ve increased inventory over last year in anticipation of another cold winter and to combat running out of inventory. Last year got a little chaotic as dealers were flying through our primary sku’s. ”

Don’t believe AccuWeather?  The Farmer’s Almanac is making similar predictions.  It anticipates colder than normal temperatures in 2/3rds of the country (with warmer than normal temps in the West).  It says snowfall will be above normal in most of the Northeast, but below normal in much of New England.
