Last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced it will conduct a survey to find out how people feel about in-car alcohol detection devices.
NHTSA want to explore the “feasibility of” using alcohol detection technology in cars, which it believes could reduce the number of drunk driving incidents and deaths. The breathalizer-device technology prevents drivers from operating a car while their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is at or above the legal limit.
Surveys are often the first step in making a technology mandatory, said a Jalopnik blog. The next step is to develop testing procedures for the alcohol testing equipment.
NHTSA has already held focus groups on the topic, but now wants to interview by phone 1,000 licensed drivers in all 50 states.
Many states already allow judges to mandate the use of an ignition interlock alcohol detection device by repeat offenders of DWI (driving while intoxicated) laws.
Drunk drivers killed almost 10,000 people in 2011 and account for 31 percent of highway fatalities.
Why should I have to pay for a device that won’t let me start my car if I do not drink?
I used to install this JUNK I don’t drink and I always had problems with the thing not working for me also what if I take my car in for service?
Am I going to put my lips on a device a service person I don’t know did after he’s worked on my car? First I’m not Gay second I barely know the guy let alone Kiss him!
I see this as a big problem for transmitting colds and other things like this.
