In a surprise announcement from Apple last June, 9 car makers were said to offer Siri Eyes Free for their vehicles in the future, with Honda among them.
Wednesday, Honda gave us some specifics, announcing the feature will be offered on the 2013 Accord and Acura RDX and ILX models as a dealer-installed option.
Drivers will be able to ask Siri questions as they drive, such as requesting directions, sending speech to text messages, and setting reminders.
Honda said it “reengineered its software to seamlessly integrate Siri Eyes Free mode into its Bluetooth HandsFreeLink via the onboard microphone and speakers,” according to a press release.
It added, “Honda recognizes the power of Siri and Eyes Free mode as an in-vehicle tool that will help meet the connectivity and convenience needs of its customers in a responsible manner.”
We’ve sent Honda an inquiry on the price of the Siri option. We’ll post it, if we receive an answer.
The 8 other automakers named by Apple as planning to offer Siri Eyes Free include BMW, GM, Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, and Chrysler.
Chevy is offering the feature in the 2013 Sonic and Spark EV.
Mercedes-Benz was the first European car maker to include Siri in September in its A Class.
In the aftermarket, Alpine announced at CES this month it will offer Siri Eyes Free in a new ICS-X7HD car audio AV receiver (that also has MirrorLink).
Kenwood, Audiovox and Pioneer also offer radios compatible with Siri.
