Pioneer is one of the first, if not the first leading car audio supplier to solve the Apple iPhone 5 video compatibility issue, for some of its car radios.
Until now, Pioneer’s high tech AppRadio car decks that seamlessly work with a smartphone, could not play music let alone video from an iPhone 5.
At CES, Pioneer announced that the AppRadio 2 and several other 2013 radio models including DVD/receivers starting at $400 will be iPhone 5 compatible for audio and apps. Additionally, some older car radios will be compatible.
The devices will both control and display apps from an iPhone 5. The models will also be able to receive video content through the car radio, said Pioneer.
A firmware update is required, and adapters may also be required.
“The big question everyone is asking is when we will have compatibility with iPhone 5 and AppRadio. The good news is on Tuesday, we’ll show iPhone 5 connectivity with multiple products to display and control apps from a connected iPhone 5,” said Pioneer’s Ted Cardenas.
A full accounting of which Pioneer car radios work with iPhone 5 will be available on the Pioneer web site.
With the AppRadio 2, specifically, iPhone 5 compatibility is achieved via a similar connection as an Android phone (through an HDMI accessory as well as a Bluetooth connection). In the case of the iPhone 5, a Lightning connector is required.
We will bring you more details as they become available.
