Cyber Monday Continues to Gain Popularity

Next Monday will mark the 7th anniversary of Cyber Monday, and this year, 41 percent of those surveyed by PriceGrabber, plan to shop on the day now synonymous with online discounts.

Price Grabber mobile shoppingThis compared to 37 percent who had planned to shop on that day in 2011 and 33 percent in 2010, according to a survey by PriceGrabber.

Clothing and consumer electronics are expected to top consumer’s gift purchases on Cyber Monday, with 47 percent claiming they will purchase consumer electronics devices, and 53 percent planning to buy clothing; followed by 43 percent computers, laptops and tablets and 43 percent book, DVDs, CDs or games.

About 6 percent plan to shop from a mobile device on Cyber Monday.

For the full holiday season this year, 16 percent will ship using a mobile device, compared to 13 percent last year, according to PriceGrabber surveys.

Also for the full holiday season, consumers indicated they will make 62 percent of their purchases online and 32 percent from a brick and mortar store, plus 6 percent from a mobile phone.  Last year, the figures were 63 percent, 33 percent and 4 percent, respectively.

“Our holiday survey results clearly show that consumers are increasingly relying on mobile devices to save money. When mobile shoppers were asked to select all of the ways in which they plan to use their mobile device to save money on holiday gifts this year, 70 percent said they plan to check prices online before making an offline purchase. Sixty-six percent indicated that they plan to make purchases from their mobile device, 52 percent plan to view retailer emails containing coupons and discounts while shopping in stores and 46 percent said they will use comparison shopping applications and bar code scanners to save money.,” said a PriceGrabber press release.

  1. Specialty Retailers… This is the new reality. Most consumers; 2 to 1 are planning to make their CE purchases on line. That is up just a bit from last year and I suspect next year will see a confirmation of this trend. What to do?

    ONE: Know what your consumers know. Do the same Internet research your consumers are doing. Know what they will learn about you and your stuff on-line.

    TWO: Deliver a compelling hospitality experience that a consumer cannot hope to have on-line. Show ’em you are thrilled that they have taken the time to find and visit your store. Something new that the consumer did not know when he entered your store should be included in your discussion with the consumer.

    THREE: Include in that compelling hospitality experience products and services in which you are confident a profit can be achieved.
