Car audio sales to retailers in the third quarter showed fairly steady sales in amplifiers and speakers, but declines in in-dash radios.
Amplifier sales held steady in units, but fell 2 percent in dollar volume over last year. Speakers fell 2 percent in units and 5 percent in dollars.
In-Dash car radios (without screens) saw a 12 percent drop in dollar sales and a 10 percent decline in units over the period last year.
Ben Arnold of NPD said of the statistics, “I look at fairly stable numbers for amplifiers and speakers and bigger dips for in-dash players and multimedia. What that says to me is that people are bringing [into the car] their own sources and they are connecting them.”
On the other hand, people are buying “the products that help enhance” the music sources they bring into the car, so that amplifiers and speakers are the more stable categories, he said.
