Some 2011 BMW and MINI owners can now access the MOG music streaming service that gives you on-demand access to songs from the car radio controls.
Pick any of 13 million songs and it’s served up through the steering wheel controls or the infotainment controller.
Users connect an iPhone running the MOG app to the car radio to see the MOG app on the car radio screen.
The aftermarket should be getting MOG soon. A spokeswoman said, “MOG will be announcing deals with aftermarket suppliers in the near future.”
The service gives you unlimited, ad-free access to its catalog BUT there’s a $9.99 per month fee.
Reviewer Sam Grobart of the New York Times tried out the system and said it was “cool,” but you had to spell out the names of the songs to access them while driving.
“What’s it like to use all this? It’s pretty cool, actually. I didn’t do a whole lot of single-title searching while I was driving, because the idea of spelling out “J.U.N.G.L.E. L.O.V.E.” while going 50 m.p.h. didn’t seem smart. But if you have someone in the car with you, they can have a lot of fun playing D.J. ” You can download playlists in advance on your computer to make car listening easier, he noted.
MOG can also give you a “Lady Gaga” station that plays nothing but Lady Gaga if you like, whereas Pandora mixes in similar artists.
The service is only on a limited number of vehicles at the moment. You must have a 2011 BMW or Mini with the BMW Apps or Mini Connection option installed.
MOG says it has 160,000 monthly users, and its growing fast.
