Google is buying smartphone-maker Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion in cash and plans to develop “supercharged” phones, it announced.
The deal is expected to close at the end of the year or early 2012, at which time Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business.
Android will remain an open platform and Motorola will continue as a licensee of Android.
The purchase squarely places Google in competition with Apple, RIM and other smartphone makers. It could lead to improved Motorola phones because of a tighter integration of hardware and software—the kind of integration that Apple enjoys as it controls all aspects of its phones, noted Business Insider.

Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers.
