How about a left-turn crash detector? BMW is developing such a feature because left turns, along with U-turns, are the leading cause of accidents in Germany.
The “Left Turn Assistant” uses GPS and a camera to tell when you are about to make a left turn. Then the system uses lasers to get the lay of the road and if it detects oncoming traffic, it gives you a warning and activates the brakes.
CNET says the system only works at speeds below 6 mph, which is suitable for when a car is slowed to make a turn. And the system disengages when the driver hits the brakes or taps the accelerator. –Bill D.
