Apple to Launch Newspaper Subscriptions: Report

Apple will soon offer a subscription plan for newspapers, including local papers, which can be viewed on the iPad, thus helping put the nail in the coffin of the printed tabloid.

While a few leading newspapers are already available on the iPad, local papers are not. But the San Jose Mercury News reports that many local papers are preparing iPad apps.

Apple may take 30 percent cut of subscription revenue and a 40 percent cut of advertising revenue, estimates one analyst.

If the report is true, Apple will push the newspaper industry closer to its goal of transferring subscribers over to digital, eReader versions of newspapers, thereby eliminating expensive printing costs.
