WikiReader, the pocket device loaded with Wikipedia information, landed its first retail placement at BJ’s Wholesale Club and will announce other major retail placements shortly.
The device has begun selling at all 180 BJ’s locations for the back to school season at $69. School children and baby boomers tend to be the device’s chief buyers, said the company.
The WikiReader from Openmoko stores over 3 million Wikipedia topics on an SD card. The non-connected device offers access to the Wikipedia information via a touch screen that’s readable in sunlight. There’s an onscreen keyboard and the unit runs on runs on 2 AAA batteries for a year.
