Alpine Electronics, based in Japan said it has teamed with Fujitsu Ten to jointly develop software for in-vehicle devices that work with smartphones.

The reason for the joint effort is “to improve our product competitiveness,” said Alpine.

Fujitsu Ten is an OEM car audio supplier and it was the parent corporation of Eclipse car audio, a popular specialty brand in the U.S. which went of business about 4 years ago.

As autos become more complex, “the in-vehicle devices provided by automotive electronics manufacturers like us become more sophisticated,” said Alpine noting that in-car devices now need to work with smartphones.

‘The customer’s needs for in-vehicle devices are changing.  There is a growing need for combining the functions of consumer electronics products [such as] smartphones and in-vehicle devices, and the roles of in-vehicle devices are expanding. To meet these needs, we [will] work on developing the platform for in-vehicle devices.  Moreover, we [will] improve the development efficiency through the joint development by both companies,” said an Alpine statement.
