Ford has been testing “Electronic Brake Lights” that can alert many cars behind you, so they can begin braking early.

The wireless system sends a signal to the dashboard of other vehicles that then illuminates a light on the dash.

Ford has been testing the system as well as 19 other potential future safety systems as part of an industry-wide 4 year joint research project in Germany.

The study found the electronic braking technology could potentially help avoid collisions.

Ford also tested in-car Internet that alerts drivers to information such as available parking spaces and up-to-date pictures from traffic cameras.

“Car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications represent one of the next major advancements in vehicle safety,” said Paul Mascarenas, Ford’s Chief Technical Officer. “Ford is committed to further real-world testing here and around the world with the goal of implementation in the foreseeable future.”
