Apple will use a new type of screen technology (GF2) that is so thin and light in the upcoming iPad Mini that the 7-8-inch device will be as thin as Apple’s next generation iPhone, said an analyst.

The new screen technology is an improvement over the iPad’s current “G/G touch structure” screen, AppleInsider reports citing analyst Ming-Chi Kuo with KGI Securities.
But production of such a thin screen is challenging in terms of assembly line yield and quality control (passing Apple’s drop test). As a result, the launch of the iPad Mini was delayed and the device will now ship the first half of October, becoming available to consumers later in October.
The iPad Mini will measure less than 4.2 millimeters thick, about half that of the newest iPad, measuring 9.4 millimeters thick.
The Mini is expected to be formally announced in October, following the launch of the next iPhone September 12, reported AllThingsD late last month.
