That update to the MyFord Sync that was announced in November will be on its way to more than 300,000 current MyFord Touch radio/system owners this week.

Ford is mailing out USB drives with the upgrade, fixing many of the problems that caused the system to get a thumbs down rating in Consumer Reports last year.

The upgrade delivers a faster touch screen response and improved phone pairing and compatibility. It was developed from feedback by customers.

Users now get simpler graphics and the text is easier to read.  Voice recognition has been improved and the radio also now supports tablet PCs and Audible  audiobooks.   Entering destinations for navigation has been improved, as have navigation maps.

The upgraded system will also roll out to all new 2013 car models that offer MyFord Touch.

Ford used the occasion to tout some of the MyFord Touch milestones.

It claims 56 percent of Ford car buyers say the MyFord Touch was an important part of their car buying decision.

Voice commands were used regularly by 77 percent of MyFord Touch owners as of late 2011, an increase of 14 percent from 2010.

Ninety-one percent of owners use Sync’s hands-free calling capability at least once a month and 62 percent use it on a daily basis.

Eighty-five percent use wireless Bluetooth audio streaming, with nearly half using it every day.
