This Two Minute Ritual Can Save Your Shop Thousands and Fill Your Social Feed

Finger Scratch

Every shop owner has had this conversation. The customer picks up their vehicle, spots a scratch on the console, and asks the question nobody wants to answer: was that there before?

Sometimes you know it was. Usually you can’t prove it.

Here’s a fix that costs nothing and takes about two minutes. Before the vehicle goes in the bay, the salesperson or installer walks around the vehicle and films it. Paint, panels, bumpers. Then they get in, run the camera along the dash, down the center console, and over the door panels etc. If there’s a scratch or a crack already there, no need to narrate it. Just run a finger over it, and give in a rub on camera.

Then turn the ignition on and hold the camera on the cluster. Any warning lights already lit gets recorded right there, timestamped, before a single panel comes off.

It Protects Your Profit

This footage is the end of the damage argument. When a customer says you cracked the trim, you have video from before the job started. No discount to make it go away, no arguing, no chargeback. It only takes one avoided claim to cover the time your whole team spends on this.

It Catches Problems Before Your Customer Does

That ignition-on shot works both ways. If an ABS light is flashing at pickup and nobody remembers whether it was on at drop-off, you’re guessing. Now you’re not. And if the light is new, you caught it in the bay instead of in the parking lot. It could be as simple as snapping a harness back in, the light goes off, the customer never knows there was an issue.

It Opens the Door to Upsell

Send the walkaround video to the customer and you’ve done two things. You’ve shown them their vehicle is in the bay and the work has started, which is the update most customers are waiting for. And you’ve opened a conversation.

Now the tech can ask the question: do you want the USB port in the glove box or the center console? Want us to run a second charging cord to the back seat? The vehicle is already open, the trust is already there, and the customer is looking at their own dash on their own phone. That is the easiest yes in 12-volt.

It Gives Your Store Content You Did Not Pay For

When the job is done, film the same walkaround again. Same angles, same path across the dash.

Then walk the customer through the job at pickup. Show them the work, show them the dash is clean, show them nothing got marked up. This is the moment the customer is the happiest with your shop, and this is the moment to ask for the 5-star Google review.

Now you have all three pieces, for a great social post: a before, an after, and a review in the customer’s own words. Post it together. This combination is social proof of a happy customer, not a stock photo with a logo on it.

Do this on 1 vehicle a day and at the end of the month, your store has 21 days of content. Keep going and that is over 250 vehicles a year, a wall of happy customers for the website, the social feed, or a year end highlight reel.

You could not buy that kind of marketing. And it cost the store nothing but four minutes a car.

Two minutes at check-in. Two minutes at delivery. Fewer claims, more upsells, better reviews, and a content library that builds itself.

Shops are walking past this opportunity every single day.

  1. Bravo, well said. We also take and share pictures of our installations in mid-progress to show customers that we take pride in our work, even with the things they DON’T see in the final outcome. As a bonus, those photos taken during the install process give us reference points (and insight to any troubleshooting) in our customer-vehicle database.

  2. GREAT STUFF…
Brick & Mortar specialty retailers should be all about providing a value add consumer experience that competitors INCLUDING the Internet cannot ~ do not provide. This “two minute ritual” WILL demonstrate to the consumer (and social media viewers) that your business is aware, your business cares and therefore your business will likely provide superior install services with “world class attention to detail”.
