Press Release (EDITED): CUPERTINO, Calif. – Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo today, its first foldable smartphone. The device features a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display, powered by the new A20 Pro chip. Pricing starts at $1,999 for 256GB, with pre-orders opening October 16 and sales starting October 23.
The iPhone Duo replaces Face ID with Touch ID built into the side button. It supports MagSafe charging, according to Apple. It also carries a dual-battery design for extended runtime and a hinge Apple describes as durable enough for daily folding and unfolding.
For the 12-volt and car audio aftermarket, the launch raises real questions about mounting and charging hardware. The Duo’s folded dimensions differ from a standard iPhone, so existing phone mounts, cradles, and wireless charging pads built for slab-style phones may not fit it correctly. Its added thickness when folded could also affect clearance in tight console and dash mounts.
MagSafe support is good news for installers and retailers who sell magnetic charging mounts. It means the Duo can work with the same magnetic charging ecosystem already common in vehicles, without requiring a new connector. Retailers may want to test current MagSafe mounts against the Duo’s shape before recommending them to customers.
The return of Touch ID also matters for dash and console placement. Face ID needs a clear view of the driver’s face, which limits where a phone can sit in a vehicle. Touch ID does not have that requirement, giving installers more flexibility when they choose a mounting spot.
Apple has not confirmed whether CarPlay will work differently on the Duo when it is folded versus unfolded. Installers and retailers should watch for early reviews and teardown reports once the device ships on October 23 to see how it performs with existing in-car systems.
