Sony Honda Mobility announced it has discontinued the launch of the AFEELA electric car that was to be filled with Sony entertainment including PlayStation technology and an immersive audio system.
The final blow came as Honda decided to back out of development of its planned EVs as announced on March 12. It meant the Sony Honda Mobility joint venture couldn’t use certain Honda technologies, leaving it no reasonable path forward.
Engadget noted the AFEELA1 and its planned AFEELA2 successor were doomed by the time they approached delivery in mid 2026 (in California only initially).
The car had been teased for six full years and was out matched in terms of mileage for the price. Plus demand for EVs slipped during that period. Additionally, back in 2020, autonomous cars seemed imminent and so a car cabin filled with gaming and immersive entertainment was more relevant, said Engadget.
The car was to include a 28-speaker system with Dolby Atmos and separate listening zones.
Sony Honda Mobility will issue full refunds for reservations.
