Intoxalock resumed service after cyber attack outage

Intoxalock said its ignition interlock calibration systems are back up and running (as of Sunday, March 22) following a Cyberattack that crippled the system for over a week.

Intoxalock said in a status update, “We’re pleased to share that our systems have resumed. Installations, calibrations, and service center support are now available.”

The company said it is continuing to review the ‘cyber event’ that caused the outage and that it hopes to ‘provide more information soon.’

The event occurred on March 14.  Several days later, the company was able to offer customers a 10 day extension for those scheduled for calibration or installation of their systems.  Initially, customers requiring calibration of their Intoxalock breathlizer systems were left stranded and unable to operate their vehicle.

Dealers praised the company for taking action.  Jodi O’Connor of Jo-Di’s Sound Centers, CT said, “It was great that they had the10-day extension. We plugged the devices into  our docking station and were able to give them an extension.”  Joe Cassity of Tunes-n-Tint, FL said,  “Intoxalock is a great partner and handled the situation as best they could. I would hate to think of what would’ve happened if we had those issues with another provider to be perfectly honest.”

Consumers were understandably angry during the first few days of the event as they were unable to drive their cars and posted many comments to that effect on our initial story.  Ignition interlock customers are those required by a court mandate to install a breathalizer device in their vehicle at an authorized service center following a DUI conviction. Only a clean breathalizer test will allow the car to start. But the devices must be calibrated regularly (every 30 to 120 days) at a service center. Missing a calibration appointment can trigger penalties.

Intoxalock serves a reported 150,000 customers annually across 46 states.  It works with over 5,500 service centers, many of which are car audio shops.

Intoxalock’s latest status update said:

For Existing Customers

  • Those who received a 10‑day service date extension in eligible states should return to your service center on or before that date for a calibration.
  • If you were unable to participate in the 10‑day extension, you will need to have your vehicle taken to your local service center for a calibration.
  • If you were not required to calibrate during the pause, you should continue to use your device as you normally do.
  • Continue to follow your service requirements and device prompts

For Customers Waiting for Installation

If you were recently waiting to schedule or complete an installation, you may now:

  • Schedule new installation appointments.*

  1. Thousands of people are still stranded. Theres reports of the customer service at intoxalock not answering their phones or hanging up on people when they get frustrated.

  2. Is this satire? This wasn’t a small thing. Literally thousands of people were stranded because of this. The devices that Intoxalock provides have been destroying people’s lives. Their devices kill your car battery and when you go to jump start it they give you a violation. When you go to try and get ut removed they laugh at you because another month of violations means you have to keep it longer. How long is this terrible company going to be able to continue to operate before it becomes an episode of American Greed.
