Helix unveiled at the recent MasterTech Expo unconventional subwoofers using an adaptable weighting system.
The new Impact Q subwoofers come with three 52-gram (1.8-ounce) weighting plates which can be used in any quantity. Technicians can use these weights to manipulate the Thiel-Small parameters of the subs and suit them to a particular enclosure.
“When a technician fabricates an enclosure and figures out how much airspace he has, he can now actually look at the available parameters of the IQ woofer and adjust it to allow it to work the absolute best it possibly can in the enclosure that he built, as opposed to trying to manipulate the enclosure,” said Chris Van Ry of MSC, the North American distributor of Helix.
“Most modern audio clients have limitations when it comes to the locations we can use for bass. This unique concept allows technicians to design inside those limitations and have an optimized solution,” he said.

The dual 2-ohm subwoofers come in three sizes, with the IQ W8 (8-inch) and IQ W10 (10-inch) shipping now. The IQ W12 (12-inch) will follow within 30 days.
Helix also introduced a pair of new spare tire subwoofer enclosures alongside other products. The spare tire subwoofers are shipping now and come in single 8-inch and dual 8-inch models that bolt onto a trunk or hatch in an enclosure resembling a spare tire.
