Port strike suspended

Dockworkers and the Maritime Alliance reached a tentative agreement late yesterday that postpones a port strike for 90 days, said reports.

The Longshoremen’s union obtained a 62 percent wage increase over a six year contract, which brings the hourly wage for a top dockworker to $63 per hour at the end of the new contract, up from $39.

Union members were instructed to return to work immediately.  A sticking point in negotiations surrounds the use of automated machinery and this will be a key topic when negotiations resume on January 15.

Fortunately, the strike, which shut down shipping container traffic from Maine to Texas, lasted only three days.

While it could take days to catch up in port activity, a strike of such short duration was not expected to disrupt the economy.
