Owner of 3-store car audio chain Professional Car Audio, CA entered the subwoofer enclosure market about a year ago, under the name PCA Enclosures, joining a handful of other retailers who are producing sub boxes on a large scale.
During the pandemic, when subwoofer boxes were in short supply, David Tapia began producing his own and soon other dealers were asking to buy them.
“Finally, my wife said, let’s buy a CNC machine and really make this a business,” he said.
Now Tapia has a second CNC machine and his shop can produce about 50 to 100 boxes a week. Capacity is expected to increase as the second CNC becomes fully operational. Shipping times run about two weeks from ordering.
PCA Enclosures offers 28 SKUs, half of which are non-LED and the other half are similar boxes with LED lighting.
Beyond the CNC machining, Tapia customizes the boxes with bondo for curved finishes.”The boxes have character,” he said.
“What stands out about our boxes is whether sealed or ported or if it’s a high output box or minimum air space, which we call factory fit, they are going to cost the same. If it’s ported, it does take us a little longer to build. But what’s important to us is what’s going to sound the best…we make it easier when customers order.”
Retail pricing for non-LED enclosures is $1,099 and $1,350 for LEDs versions. The boxes may be viewed on Instagram.
PCA Enclosures has 15 accounts evenly distributed across the US, most of them acquired after the company displayed at the SEMA show in November.
The line is represented by Ovation Manufacturer Reps, CA and The 12 Volt Specialist, NH.
Tapia may be adding other reps. His goal is to sell to about 100 retail accounts by the end of the year.
Tapia owns three car audio stores. The newest opened about three years ago in in Visalia, CA . It is a large location, enabling Tapia room to produce the sub enclosures for the other stores in Porterville and Tulare, CA, and eventually for other retailers.
