Veteran 12V Exec Launches New Company

Cicada Audio is a new motorcycle audio company launched by veteran 12 volt product designer/manager, Larry Frederick.

The new company offers plug and play audio for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Its selling points include lightweight products that won’t weigh down the bikes that use neodymium magnets instead of the heavier ferrite magnets.  Additionally, Cicada horn tweeters have replaceable components (users just screw off the back).

Products are mid to high end at competitive price points.  “We make a $500 6 1/2 inch speaker but they are neodymium with two inch voice coils instead of the standard 1.5 inches. Everyone does a one inch voice coil on the tweeter, mine are 1.4 inches.  The size of the voice coil determines the power so I want to give you high sensitivity and power,” said Frederick, who has designed products since the start of the car audio market under brands including Altec Lansing, Alpine, AudioMobile, Phoenix Gold, Coustic and more recently Cerwin Vega and Diamond Audio.

“I am the Godfather of car audio. I was there when the earth was cooling,” he quipped. “I was putting 15-inch woofers in cars in 1974.”

Products include harnesses (sold as options). Some of the line will ship next month.

Frederick will work with three distributors and hopes to sell to only about 50 dealers in the near term.

“It is time for a high end and more focused approach to motorcycle audio. Today’s motorcycle audio is like car audio circa 1990…growing, and needing nurturing, technical knowledge, training, and custom solutions,” he said.

• 4 ohm and 2 ohm version

Coax Speakers – CX Series

• Waterproof 6.5 inch and 6 X 9 inch shallow Coax (Aluminum dome tweeter)
• 4 ohm and 2 ohm version

DSP Processor –  DSP88

• 8in/8 out DSP processor, small and BT controlled setup

Frederick says he has designed thousands of mobile audio products, won five  CES Design & Engineering Awards and holds two US design patents.
