‘Street Legal’ LED Conversion Kit

Oracle Lighting is shipping what it calls the only DOT compliant “street legal” LED headlight conversion kit.

The new LED package “is small enough to allow the LED placement to precisely mimic the original halogen filament location. This positions the LED to utilize the factory lamp optics accurately and without causing glare- which has traditionally been the challenge with retrofit bulbs,” said Oracle Director of Development Justin Hartenstein.

He notes that other suppliers have adopted similar technology and used their own compliance testing.  But Oracle “is the first to have 3rd- party certified compliance testing approved,” Hartenstein said.

“There are labs throughout the country that do compliance testing. Really, with replacement bulbs, or what NHTSA refers to as a replaceable light source, the issue is always the photometry of the bulb. If you picture a grid on a wall…” certain amount of light must fall on certain parts of the grid, he continued.  This assures that the right amount of light is aimed higher or lower so it doesn’t cause glare to other drivers.

LEDs are becoming more refined and miniaturized.  “With the new cluster of LEDs, we’re able to mimic the exact positioning of the original halogen filament and by mimicking the position just right, we’re able to meet those requirements,” he added.

The LED bulb conversion kits are legal from a federal stance.  “The only thing that would make it not legal is if there’s some local ordinance that says you can’t have LED lights in your car.  But even the new Honda Civic comes with LED lights…” Hartenstein said.

The new V-Series bulb conversion kits require no additional wiring or external drivers. It’s a straight bulb replacement.  There’s a chip inside the bulb that regulates the temperature.

Other features:

  • 6-volt daytime running light (DRL) compatible LED bulb
  • precision Filament Geometry for no-glare illumination
  • no fan, heat-sink, or other obstructing/cumbersome cooling system
  • DRL compatibility offers even more functionality by working with vehicles that use the headlight bulb for the DRL function at a reduced voltage; operates at 50 percent brightness in DRL mode
  • MSRP: $119.95 – $149.95.

Bulb specifications:

  • Color Temp: 6000K
  • Input Voltage: 6-32V DC
  • DRL Compatible: yes
  • Power Draw: 17W/ bulb
  • Lumens: 3,600LM/ set
  • Efficacy: >100lm/W* (*industry-leading efficacy ratio)

“The V-Series LED driver operates from a 6V to 24V input and offers constant current output at up to 1 amp,” Hartenstein continued. “If the bulb becomes hot and surpasses optimal working temperature, the driver can reduce the current by altering the PWM duty cycle until temperature stabilizes. Supplementing passive thermal management with active techniques such as this allow for a very small bulb package without risking damage to the LED or creating an environment where the LED lifetime would otherwise be significantly shortened.”
