Now that SiriusXM finalized its purchase of Pandora today, the company is moving quickly to offer packages that combine the services.
By mid year, it will offer a new SiriusXM radio channel whose programming is based on the “billions of thumbs up” by Pandora listeners.  And a Pandora-powered channel will be offered on the SiriusXM app based on a user’s favorite artist.
Prior to the Pandora purchase, SiriusXM had over 34 million listeners. It now jumps to 100 million listeners, making it “the world’s largest audio entertainment company,” it said. Its audience now includes 40 million self-paying subscribers, plus 75 million ad-based or trial listeners.
Starting early this month, the company will also offer select Pandora listeners a unique $5/month mostly music or news/talk package on SiriusXM.  Conversely, SiriusXM subscribers will get an extended 14 day trial for the paid Pandora Premium service.     “This is just the beginning,” said SiriusXM CEO Jim Meyer on a conference call with analysts.

The merging of Pandora and SiriusXM is also expected to carve a better position for Pandora in the car, while giving SiriusXM a better position in the home.

Additionally, SiriusXM announced this week it will become a standard feature in ALL Toyota models and trims sold in the continental US.  The expansion starts this fall and the satellite radio service will be in 80 percent of  new Toyota car volume by next year.  The company also won a 10 year contract with Toyota that runs to 2028.

SiriusXM also announced it will greatly expand its 360L platform to General Motors vehicles by year’s end.  360L allows extensive on-demand programming and more channels and it makes it easier to find new programming.

The satellite radio company also announced it is pushing heavily into the smart speaker market, as a means of expanding beyond the car.  Meyer told analysts to “stay tuned” for more announcements regarding smart speakers from Amazon and other makers.

SiriusXM will also soon expand its video service beyond Howard Stern programming, Meyer said.

  1. lol nothing like stacking those statistics to make yourself look more legit. They’re still two completely different platforms. SiriusXM does not now have 100 million listeners. That’s like saying Skype has 17.8 billion users, because it’s owned by Microsoft and anybody who uses Microsoft products is also a Skype user.
