BMW next year will charge a subscription fee for Apple CarPlay, it told The Verge at the Detroit Auto Show.
Technology Production Manager for BMW North America, Don Smith, said the subscription fee is only fair, as some users decide they don’t want CarPlay over time or switch to an Android phone. So instead of an upfront, one-time fee for CarPlay, users will pay $80 per year, The first year will be free.
Currently BMW charges $300 upfront for the CarPlay option.
BMW does not presently offer Android Auto on its vehicles but Smith told The Verge that Google Assistant is coming to the lineup this year, as well as Amazon Alexa.

Gee, another reason not to buy a BMW.
VW doesn’t even do that.
Horrible. Seems like BMW has been taking notes from EA and all those microtransactions.
It’s all about the money, isn’t it?
