Intel Shows AR, VR Batmobile entertainment

Feature Story:

At the LA Auto Show this week, Intel announced it has teamed with Warner Bros to develop “in-cabin, immersive experiences” in autonomous cars.

Forget the car radio and a 7-inch screen. Intel is looking to develop in-car virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).  So a Batman fan “could enjoy riding in the Batmobile through the streets of Gotham City, while AR capabilities render the car a literal lens to the outside world,” said Intel CEO Brian Krzanich in a blog about his LA Auto Show speech.

“Not only do we see passengers consuming content ranging from movies and television programming, we imagine riders enjoying immersive experiences never seen before, courtesy of in-cabin virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) innovations,” he said.

Riders will also ” view advertising and other discovery experiences,” he added.

Intel did not respond to our request for more information.

Intel and Warner are creating a “proof-of-concept” car to demonstrate such a system. The car will be part of a 100-vehicle fleet of autonomous cars Intel is testing in the  US, Israel, and Europe.

Intel notes that the shift to autonomous cars will “create one of the greatest expansions of consumer time available for entertainment we’ve seen in a long time.”  The average American spends 300 hours per year behind the wheel, which would be freed up for entertainment or work.

Intel purchased Mobileye earlier this year.
