Mid City Engineering, which began offering motorized license plate kits for luxury vehicles 6 months ago, has expanded its offering to more vehicles.

The motorized license plates let you show the front plate when required by law and hide it when not required for a sleeker, factory look.  The kits allow you to control the motorized plate via your factory keyfob or steering wheel controls, depending on the vehicle.  Current kits are available for an expanded list of Mercedes, Lexus and Audi vehicles.

The kits are also aimed at owners who don’t want to drill into the bumper of their vehicle to mount the plate.

Some customers “don’t want the holes in the front of the car. A lot of the cars don’t have brackets.  And some want the ability to hide the palte and retail the factory look,” said Noah Thatcher of Mid City

In the Lexus, the kit is linked to the cruise control and the gear position so when the car is in park it will hide in park but show when in drive or vice versa.

The  Mercedes, the kit can be linked to the key so when you lock the doors it shows the plate and when you unlock them it hides the plate.

The kits including the motorized license plate holder are available at $374. You can view a video of the kit here.

  1. OK, this is cool, but one point not taken into account, some cities require a plate on the car if its parked on the street, no tag it gets towed off and impounded. This often leads to big fines and fees. As for hiding for running toll booths someone will hook that up for an extra charge so high it would be cheaper just to pay the toll.

  2. Ahhhh I thought they were talking about the motor that hides your plate when you run the toll!
