With all the new innovations in the Tesla electric Model X SUV announced this week, Wired took the time to mention its sound system, which it said was, “in a word, glorious…The sound is crisp, clear, and loud—even when standing 15 feet away from the car.”
The new Model X, with 250 mile range and “falcon wing” doors, was introduced Tuesday. It has a 17-inch curved screen taken from the earlier Model S. The sound system has 560 watts and 17 speakers, according to Wired.
There are also other interesting convenience innovations in the vehicle, which is expected to start at a price around $80,000, moving up to $132,000 for a fully loaded “signature” model. First deliveries are planned for the second half of 2016.
The Model X has a super advanced keyless entry. The car auto-senses your position (through triangulation) and detects your approach, and then literally opens the door for you automatically and closes it once you are in the car. Not just unlocks it, opens it.
There’s a phone dock for “blind holstering” your smartphone. When you enter the car, you don’t want to fiddle with connector cords, said Tesla CEO Elon Musk. So you can drop it in a cubby that has connectors for every type of phone as shown to the left.
Tesla takes cabin filtering to a new level. The system is so strong that it can keep you safe during a biohazard event.
A remarkable feature of the car is a panoramic windshield that gives you the impression of being in a helicopter cockpit, with lots more sky in your view. Then there’s the falcon wing doors so you can open up the back seat doors in cramped parking situations. The doors also contain sensors that monitor surroundings so they don’t hit obstacles around the car. A demo of the doors may be seen here or in the video lower down the page at 14:45 minutes in.
The Model X will come standard with automatic emergency braking and side-collision avoidance. It will also include GPS enabled Homelink (for garage door opening and control over other home features). Other key features: it will seat up to 7 people, and it comes in two versions–a 90D all-wheel-drive, with a 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds; and a P90D performance version, with a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds (or 3.2 if you get the “Ludicrous” speed upgrade).
The current Tesla Model S offers built-in Internet, but there’s no word yet on this feature in the new Model X.
