Metra Electronics, maker of car audio accessories, has introduced a new data module that allows car radios to work with factory features such as OnStar and Ford Sync.

The Axxess InfoLink lets radios–from Clarion and Sony initially– work with factory features from General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota and Volkswagen, with other car makes to follow.

InfoLink does not require flashing on a computer to work with a particular vehicle. It auto-detects the type of car that it’s in. It knows the trim level, and extra factory features within 20 seconds of being plugged in so “You don’t need to go to a computer,” said Director of Axxess, Juan Lugo at KnowledgeFest Sunday.  It also offers built-in steering wheel controls.

The InfoLink system also links to the HVAC system in certain cars so the car radio touch screen can control heating and cooling. It also allows access and control from the radio for fuel economy and other features.

Clarion will offer it through its existing VX405 and NX405 double DIN radios via a software update expected by the SEMA Show in early November. Sony showed two new radios at KnowledgeFest that work with InfoLink. The mechless (CD-less) double DIN XAV-630 BT and XAV-650BT will be available later this year.
