Apple is further along in building a self-driving car than many had believed and it is actively seeking a location for testing the cars in the San Francisco Bay area, reports the Guardian, a leading British newspaper.
Apple engineers met in May with officials from a 2,100 acre former naval base near San Francsico that is being converted to a testing site for self-driving cars.
Apple engineer Frank Fearon wrote: “We would … like to get an understanding of timing and availability for the space, and how we would need to coordinate around other parties who would be using [it],” in correspondence obtained by the Guardian under a public records request.
Google, Tesla, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and several other car makers have already received permits in California to test self-driving cars on public roads.
Several hundred Apple employees are working in secret to develop an electric car, under a project code named “Titan,” reported the Wall Street Journal in February, while Reuters said it learned Apple is working on an autonomous “Apple Car.”
Responding to The Guardian report, The Verge said that Apple is not likely to offer an Apple Car before the year 2020.
