American Road Products is entering the car audio retail aftermarket with the only 4-sensor license plate backup warning system available.
American Road owns patents on a license plate frame with four backup sensors and four sensors plus rear view camera and is the only company that can supply them. Its license plate frames require only one hole for a single wire and its full system mounts in 1 to 1.5 hours (possibly 2 hours for exotic cars), it said.
Until now American Road Products sold only commercial products or direct to car dealers.
The product, called ReverseGUARD will sense objects within 6 feet of the rear of the car and will alert the driver with an alarm and visual left/right visual distance display. As the car moves closer to the object, the alarm grows more rapid and an actual distance measurement is displayed.
A ReverseGUARD system with 4 sensors will retail in a ballpark of $499 installed with over 50 point margins.
American Road Products, based in Santa Ana, CA was launched in 1999 by a grandfather who saw his granddaughter almost get backed over by a neighbor and was able to save her. Founder Bill Porter was the first to market sensors apart from the car companies.
Porter won ME magazine’s first Automotive Aftermarket Safety Award last year.
