The top CD/receiver in car radio dollar sales for the first quarter this year was a double DIN audio model from Pioneer–the FHX720BT ($150 suggested retail price), according to The NPD Group.

Pioneer also took the number one ranking for in-dash navigation (dollar sales to consumers) with the AVIC6000NEX ($900).

Also making the top 5 ranking was the Sony MEXN5000BT in CD/receivers and two Kenwood decks in in-dash navigation–models DNX571HD and DNX891HD.

  1. And heads up to all on Sony’s new N5100BT. The wired remote input has a menu-based on/off switch. Ridiculous, I know.

    I would like to clear this up, nothing Ridiculous about it. It allow the internal setting built in SWI vs buying another module for resistive based SWI controls. So when it on you can use the one built it when its off you can add one (CAN based SWI)

    To program the built-in steering wheel remote control (default setting for MEX- XB100BT & MEX-N5100BT)
    Installation of the connection cable RC-SR1 (not supplied) is required before use.
    To enable the built-in steering wheel remote control function:
    Press Source button for 2 seconds to turn all sources off (clock will be displayed) Press Menu Button –>
    [SET GENERAL] –>
    [SET STEERING] –>
    [SET STR CONTROL] –>
    [SET USER] –>
    Press Back Button –>
    [SET STR EDIT] to program
    Programming Procedure:
    1) Once in [SET STR EDIT] scroll to desired function you wish to program. Press in on the control knob to select it (MEX-XB100BT & MEX-N5100BT). Press the respective button on the screen to select it (XAV-65 & XAV-68BT).
    2) While [REGISTER] is blinking, press and hold the button on the steering wheel remote control you want to assign the function to. When registration is complete, [REGISTERED] is displayed.
    Repeat steps 1 & 2 to program other functions.
    If an error occurs while registering, all the previously-registered information remains. Restart registration from the function where the error occurred.
    Available options to program are:
    Volume+ Volume- Seek+ Seek- ATT Source Voice Call
    • When the registration completes, the steering wheel remote control becomes available.
    When using an external wired remote control
    To enable the wired remote control:

  2. Who the hell is the NPD group and why do we care about their posted numbers?? I’m with Bill, I can’t see this ugly double-DIN beating out single Din units.

    Oh, and Bill, Sony is doing that remote on/off menu feature across their line this year, not just on the 5100BT

  4. The double-din 720BT over the single-din 6700BT? No way. Maybe in margin? Can’t possibly cost too much more to make a 720BT, but yet, retails for more money.
