Garmin announced Thursday a new nuviCam LMTHD, which is the first portable navigation device to include advanced driver safety features like collision warning.

It offers Forward Collision Warning to alert drivers if they are driving too close to the car ahead and Lane Departure Warning, which gives an alert if you drift off the road or into oncoming traffic.

Another feature is Garmin Real Vision that tackles the problem of craning to see house numbers by showing them with an arrow in the camera view.

The nüviCam uses a 6-inch glass display with pinch-to-zoom. There’s a high-definition dash cam built in to the back of the device. When powered on, the camera continuously records on a microSD card (included), and if an incident occurs, the device automatically saves files on impact. GPS records exactly where and when events occur, and drivers can play back the video on the device or watch later from a computer.

There’s also a Snapshot feature on the nüviCam that allows drivers to capture still images in or outside of the vehicle.

The dashCam also has voice activated navigation, Bluetooth and HD Digital Traffic (the most advanced traffic service offered by Garmin). With an app, you can link to a smartphone for real time weather radar. The dashCam can also be paired with a Garmin wireless backup camera.

The dashCam LMTHD will be available in May at a suggested retail price of $399.99.
