Nifty Money Maker for Car Audio Dealers

USB adapter for car Scosche

Now that everyone in a car wants to charge their devices, a new opportunity arises for car audio specialists.

One or two 12 volt charging ports in the car may no longer be sufficient so car audio dealers should offer all customers the opportunity to add custom USB charging ports to their vehicle.

Retailers say every customer who buys an audio system should be offered the chance to add some charging ports.

Vijay Mulchand of Sound Connection in Laredo, TX says “For every install, we ask everyone who has a phone or an iPad that may need charging,” if they want to add more USB outlets in the car. He charges about $69 per USB depending on the car. It involves drilling a hole and running a wire to power.

The actual USB chargers can be purchased from accessory makers such as AAMP of America, Metra, Scosche and Accele. They are offered in different versions including single or dual port models.  There’s a model with a cover.  And there’s a waterproof version for marine installations from Scosche.

“We do 5 or 6 a week,” says Ben Vollmer of Audition Audio, Cumming, GA.  “You’ve got customers with kids who have their DS and PlayStation and iPad and they want to plug into power.  You get 1/2 hour labor, while we’re already [installing something else] in the car.  It’s profitable when we’re already in the car,” he said.
