The Fed is taking a first step towards requiring cars to talk to each other for safety purposes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it will  begin drafting rules to require vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication between cars.

NHTSA said this week that V2V communication could prevent 592,000 left turn and intersection crashes a year, which would save over 1,000 lives a year.

  1. The 12V aftermarket should pay close attention to this; imagine new revenue streams from mandated V2V device retrofits on over 200 million vehicles. And this is just the beginning of new connected technologies that will be mandated over the next five years. Pay attention to these developments – they will put a lot of dollars in your pocket if you’re prepared.
