Amazon is expected to announce today its first smartphone, to work initially exclusively with AT&T wireless service, said The Wall Street Journal.
AT&T also provides service for Amazon’s Kindle tablets.
The new Amazon smartphone is expected to have a 3D screen that could provide panoramic views of clothing and other items people may shop for online. The phone could act as a “mobile cash register” for shopping online, said the WSJ.
The 3D screen might also be useful for gaming.
Amazon might also obtain more information about its shoppers from the phone, streamlining orders to its warehouses.
Rumors say the phone will come with 6 cameras and a 4.7-inch screen.
The price of the phone may be competitive as Amazon has a history of discounting hardware to drive use of its software.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos will hold a press event in Seattle today at 1:30 Eastern, 10:30 Pacific time.
